Let me emphasize right off the bat. A metal detector is just that. A METAL detector and that means all metals including gold. Good earphones are essential since sometimes a good find may just be the slightest whisper of sound in the earphones. You would never hear it if you were relying on the detector speaker. Sometimes it just takes dumb luck to be successful. One fellow I know had never hunted nuggets before. A couple of his buddies that were experienced nugget hunters took him along to show him the ropes. When he got out of the truck he decided to tune his detector there on the dirt trail.
